Why This Research Matters for Women in NT Mining?
This research highlights the contributions and experiences of women working in the Northern Territory (NT) mining industry. As mining is one of the NT’s largest and highest-paying industries, there is a unique opportunity to strengthen gender equality, enhance workplace safety and expand career pathways for women.
The study aims to showcase where progress has already been made and identify opportunities to build on these achievements. By comparing employer policies with women’s lived experiences, this research will:
- Recognise effective strategies that are already creating positive outcomes for workers.
- Highlight opportunities to strengthen alignment between workplace policies and day-to-day experiences.
- Support evaluation of gender equity initiatives to build even more inclusive, safe, and high-performing workplaces.
- Offer practical insights to refine and improve strategies, ensuring women can thrive across all levels of the industry.
The research is asking mine sites to outline what policies and initiatives they currently have in place to create workplaces that are inclusive, safe and supportive for women—both physically and psychologically. These responses will then be compared with the real experiences shared by women working in the industry. By examining both perspectives side by side, the study will highlight where practices are working well and where gaps exist, helping to identify the areas that need the most improvement.
Through this strengths-based approach, the project seeks to celebrate progress, amplify good practice and provide evidence-based recommendations that will benefit the sector, its workforce and the wider NT community.
